For the first time in Greece, the duo of Fred Frith and Dimos Vryzas will be presented live, in a special concert at YDRO, Thessaloniki.
The two musicians have been collaborating for many years, performing together at major festivals and venues across Europe, including Unerhört Festival and Stadtgarten Köln, among others. Despite their long-standing collaboration, this concert marks their first appearance as a duo in Thessaloniki.
The project is built around violin, guitar and FX, with a fully open improvisational approach. Their music moves within avant-garde and ambient territories, with no predetermined structures, compositions, or decisions made in advance. Each performance is entirely shaped in the moment, responding to the space, the acoustics, and the dialogue between the two performers.
The meeting of Fred Frith’s radical experimental language with the distinctive sonic vocabulary of Dimos Vryzas creates an immersive and dynamic sound world, where texture, tension, and silence coexist, and improvisation becomes real-time composition.

Bios:
Multi-instrumentalist, composer, and improviser Fred Frith has been making noise of one kind or another for more than 50 years, starting with the rock collective Henry Cow, which he co-founded with Tim Hodgkinson in 1968. Fred is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, song-writer, and composer for film, dance and theater. Through bands like Art Bears, Massacre, Skeleton Crew, the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet, Cosa Brava, and the FF Trio he has stayed close to his roots in rock and folk music while branching out in many other directions.
The recipient of Italy’s Demetrio Stratos Prize for his life’s work in experimental music and an honorary doctorate from the University of Huddersfield in his home county of Yorkshire, Fred taught for twenty years at the legendary epicenter of American experimental music, Mills College in Oakland, California; as well as co-directing (with Alfred Zimmerlin) the improvisation master’s program at the Musik Akademie in Basel, Switzerland. He is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzel’s much loved Step Across the Border, cited by Cahiers du Cinéma as one of the 20th century’s hundred most influential films.

Ο πολυοργανίστας, συνθέτης και αυτοσχεδιαστής Fred Frith δημιουργεί μουσική –σε κάθε πιθανή μορφή– για περισσότερα από 50 χρόνια, ξεκινώντας με το ροκ συγκρότημα Henry Cow, το οποίο συν ίδρυσε μαζί με τον Tim Hodgkinson το 1968. Ο Fred είναι κυρίως γνωστός ως πρωτοπόρος ηλεκτρικός κιθαρίστας και αυτοσχεδιαστής, τραγουδοποιός και συνθέτης για κινηματογράφο, χορό και θέατρο. Dimos Vryzas is a violinist, improviser, sound artist and curator from Thessaloniki, Greece. For several years now his focus in music has moved toward free improvisation. With a unique approach that comes out of a comprehensive spectrum of influences, from classical and folk music to rock, noise and ambient music, he is interested in exploring the limits of his instrument, working with the contrasts of acoustic / electric sound and exploring new ways of expression within music. While the violin is the main source of his sound, he often uses his voice as well as other instruments. Creating various soundscapes, podcasts, working with noises, composing music for film and theater are also at the core of his work.
As an improviser he performs regularly solo as well as in a variety of other formations such as Life Only(w/Fred Frith/DAZ Diego Aguirre), Duo Karbacher/Vryzas(w/Eva-Maria Karbacher), The Coal(w/Simos Riniotis), Savina Yannatou, Circa19(w/Thanos Kazantzis), Lay Hold(w/Gabby-Fluke Mogul) a.o.
He has curated the improvised concert series KlangBang in Basel (2017 - 2019) and co-founded the organization AdhocArts in Athens (2021). He is the founder and artistic curator of Stress.Studio in Athens and No Ordinary Festival in Thessaloniki.

Ο Δήμος Βρύζας είναι βιολιστής, αυτοσχεδιαστής, sound artist και επιμελητής γεννημένος στη Θεσσαλονίκη. Η δουλειά του επικεντρώνεται, στον ελεύθερο αυτοσχεδιασμό και την πειραματική μουσική. Στη μουσική του διαδρομή δέχτηκε ένα ευρύ φάσμα επιρροών, από την κλασική και την παραδοσιακή μουσική έως τη rock, τη noise και την ambient μουσική. Τα ενδιαφέροντά του, σήμερα, στρέφονται στη διερεύνηση των ηχητικών ορίων του βιολιού, στον πειραματισμό με το κοντράστ ακουστικού /ηλεκτρονικού ήχου και στην αναζήτηση νέων τρόπων μουσικής έκφρασης. Το βιολί είναι η κύρια πηγή του ήχου του. Πολύ συχνά χρησιμοποιεί τη φωνή του ή και άλλα όργανα για να κάνει μουσική. Η δημιουργία podcasts, ηχητικών τοπίων, η ενασχόληση με το θόρυβο και η σύνθεση μουσικής για τον κινηματογράφο και το θέατρο βρίσκονται επίσης στον πυρήνα της δουλειάς του.
