The year is 1987, and things are about to get freaky in Northern California. Freaky Tales is a gonzo action comedy that tells four surreal stories that are both woven together and woven into real-life locations and historical events in Oakland CA, San Francisco’s grittier neighbor.
In one story, young punks confront nazis at Operation Ivy and Black Flag concerts. In another, two women upstage rapper Too $hort — whose song “Freaky Tales” lends its name to the film — in a rap battle. In another, Pedro Pascal stars as a hitman trying to escape the criminal underworld. And finally, Jay Ellis plays a kung-fu fighting version of real-life basketball star Sleepy Floyd, cutting down bad guys with a samurai sword after scoring the game-winning point for Golden State Warriors over the L.A. Lakers. Each freaky tale is an underdog story about fighting back against oppression and harassment.
Freaky Tales is praised for its period details as it takes us into the diverse subcultures of 80s Oakland, and its playful grindhouse genre mashups, featuring animation, crime, music, and kung-fu. The anthology has exactly the kind of heightened action and wild comedy that we love for a Blårock movie. It’s going to be a blast.
