About this Event
This free public talk will explore the key themes and developments in Frank Bowling’s painting practice in relation to the works currently on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum. We are delighted to welcome art historian and curator Elena Crippa, in conversation with Habda Rashid, senior curator of modern & contemporary art at the Fitzwilliam Museum.
Focusing on the evolution of his visual language, it will consider Bowling’s engagement with the traditions of history painting and how he reconfigures these conventions through his lens. Particular attention will be given to his sustained exploration of abstraction, tracing his movement into and beyond the grid as both a formal and conceptual device. Through an examination of materiality, process, and the layering of personal history, alongside his use of ephemera drawn from his immediate surroundings, the talk will situate Bowling’s work within broader dialogues around art history, transnationalism, and the possibilities of painting.
