Franco Marzilli's solo exhibition, "The Call of the Senses," will open on Friday, March 6th at 5:30 PM at the Edarcom Europa gallery at Via Macedonia 12 in Rome.
The exhibition, curated by Francesco Ciaffi and Alice Crisponi, retraces Marzilli's work and key themes fifteen years after his death in 2010 in Poggio Mirteto. The artist, born in Rome in 1934, had long since moved to the Sabine region, which also became a source of inspiration for his pictorial imagery.
Francesco Ciaffi, in the catalog, notes that "Through his refined tonal painting, made of dense oil colors roughened by the tempera mixture and spread over a prepared gesso ground, he approached traditional themes such as landscape, still life, and the figure, with a unique talent for creating a dialogue between real forms and informal volumes."
And, again in the catalog, Alice Crisponi observes that "It might border on madness, but his still lifes deserve to be smelled. What neuroscience would call 'crossmodal olfactory activation' in this case becomes an immediate and involuntary stimulus, and just by looking at Marzilli's abundant fruit baskets, one seems to smell the tartness of the lemons, the sugary scent of ripe grapes, and the tart-aromatic fragrance of the quince."
The opening toast on Friday, March 6th will be hosted by the Raspo Urbano wine shop. The exhibition will be open to the public with free admission until March 21st.
