About this Event
Step into the strange, half-forgotten world of 19th-century island storytelling with Isle of Wight Miscellany by Ebenezer Hartnell - a curious and captivating collection of folklore, local history, and uncanny tales drawn from across the Isle of Wight.
In this atmospheric talk, Paul Wilson invites you to explore the voices and stories Hartnell preserved: whispers of hauntings, fragments of rural life, and echoes of beliefs that once shaped the island’s identity. Through selected readings, these long-silent tales are brought back to life with some that were never published, but were recently discovered, written in his own hand.
The journey continues as we look at the writing style and hand written notes and compare them to the enigmatic Abraham Elder who wrote Tales and Legends of the Isle of Wight. Some mysteries are just too intriguing to ignore.
Blending history, performance, and storytelling, this talk offers a rare glimpse into the island’s hidden past; where truth and myth blur, and where the old stories are never quite as far away as they seem.
