Days in Winter by Carsten Fuhrmann and Mark Klotz
Germany 2024
Short Experimental
The film essay, ‘DAYS IN WINTER’, is a fictional reconstruction of a real event. It delves into the mind of the main protagonist as he plans his own demise.
By the Kollective Soziales Geräusch (2021-24).
The film addresses the subject of suicide, illustrating its complexities through the psychological, social, and economic contexts embodied by the main protagonist’s thoughts. By revealing the multi-layered nature of the subject matter, Days in Winter brings mental health topics to the forefront of public discussion, increasing awareness and empathy, reducing prejudice, and promoting social integration. It invites the audience to reflect on the tensions between the act of dying and the act of suicide, as well as the dilemmas between the sense of social responsibility and self-autonomy.
By doing so, the film-essay aims to destigmatize mental health issues by encouraging the audience, and those individuals affected by such struggles, to perceive suicide as a symptom of psychological illness—to be openly discussed, supported, and integrated for a successful path of recovery.
