The Groveland Historical Society is excited to announce our 3rd Annual Founders Day Essay Contest – a fantastic opportunity for young historians in our community to dive into Florida's rich past and share their discoveries!
This contest celebrates the spirit of Founders Day and honors the people, places, and events that shaped our state. Open to all students residing in the Groveland and Mascotte areas.
Cash Prizes, recognition, and a spot to present await the best entries.
Division 1: Ages 12 and younger
Division 2: Ages 13–18
Top-ranked essayists in each division will be selected to read their essays aloud to the judges on Friday, March 28, 2026, from 4:00–5:00 PM in the Museum.
Essay Requirements:
Topic: Any person, place, or event in Florida history – explore pioneers, Native American heritage, citrus booms, the Seminole Wars, local landmarks like those in our Groveland timeline, or more!
Length: 1,000–2,000 words
Accuracy: Strive for historical accuracy and original insights
Required Source: Include at least one source from inside the Groveland Historical Museum or our website's timeline: www.GrovelandHistory.org/p/timeline.html – a treasure trove of local and state history!
Citations (Division 2 only): Use MLA or APA format
Presentation: Top essays will be presented by the student in 10 minutes or less
This is your chance to research, write, and shine while preserving and sharing Florida's fascinating stories. Whether you are uncovering hidden gems from Groveland's past or broader Sunshine State history, your voice matters!
