This six-week beginning woodworking class offers an in-depth introduction to the fundamentals of fine woodworking. Through the creation of a picture frame project, students will be guided through every aspect of project building, from initial design and wood selection to milling, joinery, sanding, and finishing.This class will cover the safe and thoughtful use of nearly all the power tools in the MAXT wood shop. We’ll learn in detail about the milling process (including jointer, planer, and table saw,) as well as the use of other power tools (including the band saw, drill press, and router.) One of the primary goals of this class is to help students feel more comfortable and capable around woodshop power tools. We’ll also cover a wide range of hand tools and techniques (including chisels, hand planes, and scrapers.)
We’ll discuss how the nature of wood defines the basic principles of joinery. For our frames, we’ll use splined miter joints.
Sanding, finishing, and thoughtful consideration for how to mount pictures and display our frames will also be covered.
The class is open to beginners and anyone looking for a refresher on how to use the power tools in the woodshop safely and thoughtfully through the creation of a small but challenging project.
