PLEASE READ EVERYTHING Patrick with Fossil Funatics will guide us on a 3 hour fossil adventure on the Peace River in Wauchula, FL
From Patrick:
I have lots of equipment.... Some smaller scoops and sieves for the younger ones or less adventurous that want to stay in the shallows.... and I have regular shovels /sifters for the deeper waters, more adventurous people and older kids and adults. We use aprons to keep our shark's teeth in, but some people bring their own fannie pack or small shoulder bag or something to hold their teeth in. Typically, within a group, we'll have two or three people to 1 shovel.... usually, mom or dad is shoveling and the kids looking through the sifters🦈🦈
As long as there is a parent or guardian with each participating child, we can just sign the waivers in the day of the event before we head out that morning.
Our main focus is on shark's teeth, marine, plant and shell/ invertebrae fossils.... but we occasionally do find a deer tooth or similiar..... to collect larger mammal fossils, each a person would need their own fossil permit. We will discuss it that morning when we go over general rules and such. If they like this hobby, they may want to invest the five dollars per person and register with the university of florida so they can go out collecting again and find bigger better stuff even. We love to introduce this hobby and get them excited about the fossils here in florida.
At the end of our adventure, we will come back to our vehicles and disperse finds on a large plastic table that I provide, and we can answer some questions, identify some things, and pass out baggies for everybody to take their goodies home.
I do typically have bottled water for everybody.... but everybody is welcome to bring their own small snacks/ drinks if they choose. Just bear in mind that we have to take everything out with us and bring everything back with us - tools and trash included because once we leave the vehicles, we will not be returning for the entire 3 hr trip.
I believe wauchula is going to be our best bet, because it is closest for you all coming from bartow Area.
I think for this adventure we should set a meeting time for like ten o'clock.... figuring that we should be exiting the parking lot, walking to our spot and all goes well getting everyone together that should have us done by approximately 1:30, by the time we look at our fossils and everybody uses the bathroom and packs up. You should all be leaving by 2:15.
*You only need a fossil permit, if you're going to go collecting for mammal fossils.... as I said marine, invertebrae, plant and shark are all acceptable for collecting. And yes, you get to take home everything that you find. The main thing that we make sure everybody knows is that arrowheads and artifacts are the state property and must be thrown back if found, although it is highly unlikely....
It's about a 15 minute walk from the car.... Each direction.
By the time we go in March, there will be a large island in the middle. Because this area is one of the more shallow spots within the river.... we use the home base island and beach area there adjacent and then spread out from there. People are welcome to move around and find what they consider their "best spot" as this area of the river has 🦈 gravel for nearly a mile... so they can find themselves anything from ankle, deep to waist deep.
***Fossil Funatics has given us a deep discount of $25 pp (normally $35 pp). I have NEVER taken funds for arranging events over the years for this group, however, if I am going to continue to do this I need to help cover the cost for my time, efforts, and children’s attendance to make it worth my time. I am asking each person send $27.50 I will collect and pay Patrick in one lump sum. This event is open to up to 60 people and I will also open it outside of the group after our members have registered.
I am going to apply for a fossil permit and will post that link below. It is $5 and takes 4-6 weeks to receive. You do not need this permit unless you want to keep mammal fossils.
