About this Event
Jan's beautiful copper wire pieces wowed the judges at this year's Brisbane Sculpture Festival. So much so they awarded her the sought after Shillam Prize.
Jan will describe her art practice and how she progressed from clay to metal. In her words...
My art practice changed from ceramics to metal in late 2000s, I had been working with clay since 1985 studying at TAFE in wheel work and hand-built forms but was finding the process restrictive when travelling.
Metal has given me the freedom to work in all different environments and few tools are required. The process of hand coiling clay is no different to how I use copper wire today. It slows down the making and keeps me focused on the form. I mostly use copper wire as a medium, it provides strength, colour and softness to my forms. My work is handmade from a single strand of copper wire and most pieces have anywhere from 200 to 300 metres of wire in each form.
It is also a strong link back to my grandmother’s passion of woven yarn. The soft cotton flowing through her fingers and becoming entwined and the length of yarn going on forever My series are often based on the environment where I walk and live.
