Harmen van der Tuin is a Dutch artist engaged in monumental tactile paintings in which paint is not just a medium but becomes an autonomous object in itself. His work moves on the border between painting and sculpture: he applies paint in thick layers then shape drag and model it with broad gestures and adapted tools.
What drives him is depicting the essence of painting: colour texture and movement. He omits figuration and narrative completely so that his works become pure material and visual experiences. Sometimes monochrome sometimes with subtle colour nuances his paintings have an almost shimmering presence in which light and shadow play a crucial role.
His process is physical and intuitive.
It is a celebration of BEING. The paint is not simply applied to the canvas but formed into an organic structure that seems to reveal itself. This gives his works a sculptural quality without representing anything outside themselves.
In essence his work revolves around the tension between control and letting go between him as the maker and the matter that manifests itself.
His paintings move effortlessly between minimalism and expressionism. Like the succession of seasons they arise naturally.
Harmen van der Tuin (Zwolle The Netherlands) is a renowned and versatile visual artist with a career spanning over 30 years. His work includes paintings drawings sculptures and design. Known for his craftsmanship and innovative approach to materials and themes his creations have been exhibited worldwide in solo and group shows. Harmen has also completed large-scale projects and collaborated with architects galleries and international art institutions. His works are permanently represented in various galleries and institutions across the Netherlands Belgium and beyond.
Harmen van der Tuin dissolves the distinction between formal and informal art in favor of a new unity. His artworks merge elements of painting with an object-like character sublimating the idiom inherent to his way of thinking. Harmen's work is timeless and universal where the experience of beauty the pursuit of balance and harmony blend seamlessly with fundamental forms matter and the use of color. This results in radical art that preserves its contemplative nature.
