About this Event
Join Forestry England ranger Richard on this walk exploring the overlooked veteran oaks on the edge of Balmer Lawn, hiding in plain sight for centuries.
Starting at Tilery Road car park, this 1.5 hour walk is short in distance but there's a little off track terrain to negotiate as we take a close look at these fantastic trees.
The New Forest is exeptionally important for ancient and veteran trees. It has a greater concentration than anywhere else in western Europe – more than 1,400 have been recorded here so far!
Immensely old, and full of character and charisma, ancient and veteran trees are rare. They have been sculpted by time, revered by generations of local people, and many species depend on them for their survival – including woodland birds, bats, fungi, lichens and invertebrates.
