About this Event
Forest bathing, or Shinrin-yoku (Japanese for “forest bath”), is a mindfulness-based practice of immersing yourself in a natural forest environment to enhance physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. It originated in Japan in the 1980s as a response to rising stress levels and disconnection from nature due to urbanization.
What It Involves:
- Walking slowly and quietly through a forest or wooded area
- Engaging the senses fully listening to birdsong, feeling the textures of bark or leaves, smelling the forest air
- Pausing often to breathe deeply, notice subtle details, or sit still
- Not a hike there’s no destination or fitness goal; the focus is presence and connection.
Benefits:
Research has shown that forest bathing can:
- Lower stress hormones (like cortisol)
- Reduce blood pressure and heart rate
- Improve mood and focus
- Strengthen the immune system
- Enhance feelings of awe, gratitude, and clarity
In Practice:
Sessions may include:
- Grounding exercises
- Gentle breathwork
- Sensory invitations (e.g., noticing textures, colors, sounds)
- Creative activities like journaling or nature art
- Quiet reflection or tea ceremonies in nature
Forest bathing is ultimately about slowing down, reconnecting to nature, and deepening awareness—something that’s accessible to nearly everyone, even in small wooded parks or backyard gardens.
