Around AD 800, Scandinavians arrived in Britain and settled in the western and northern parts of Scotland. Today, over 30 Scandinavian furnished burial sites are known in the Hebrides – the archipelago along Scotland’s western seaboard. These graves are rich, with decorative sword hilts, silver brooches, and other items, closely resembling contemporary Scandinavian burials despite being placed in an entirely new landscape.Where were these burials located, and what can they reveal about settlement patterns and power structures? What do the grave goods tell us about the people buried there? And is there any trace of the pre-Scandinavian peoples – the Gaels and Picts – in this burial record?
The lecture will be given by Joseph Thomas Ryder, marine archaeologist at the Bergen Maritime Museum.
