Foraging Prints: Eco-Printing with Tannin and Iron

Create your own print on fabric using fresh leaves and other foraged plant materials!

August Artist-in-Residence Sophie Stratyner will lead participants on a brief nature walk around the property, where we will collect leaves for our prints. After foraging for materials, Sophie will demonstrate how to create your eco-print dye bundle. While our bundles are steaming, students will learn some basics about the natural dyeing process, such as mordants and the play between tannin and iron, which is the basis of this eco-printing process.

All fabric will be pre-mordanted, so participants should drop off a t-shirt or other cotton garment they wish to print on at least two days before the workshop. Sophie will also have some extra fabric prepped for those cannot drop something off in advance.

This class is taught by Alchemy artist-in-resdience Sophie is a fiber artist, printmaker, photographer, and traveler. AIRs teach special classes informed by their artistic practice - this is the only time this class will be taught at Alchemy!

This class is held in the print studio in the main art building on the AAC campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email.

Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.

A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are experimenting with offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.
