Soft Book Expression (2-part class)

In this two-session class, we will conceptualize and create a meaningful personal narrative through the making of soft fabric books. In the first session, participants will spend time brainstorming structure by thinking about different bookbinding techniques, fabric choices, layout, and text.

We will use pochoir stencils and linocut blocks to make text and images for our books. The second session will focus on machine sewing, quilting, embroidery, and basic bookbinding stitches to construct our books. We will focus on using a variety of different stitching methods to create depth and texture in our fabric books.

Class takes place on two Thursdays, 8/15 and 8/22, from 2-6pm.

This class is taught by Alchemy artist-in-resdience Sophie is a fiber artist, printmaker, photographer, and traveler. AIRs teach special classes informed by their artistic practice - this is the only time this class will be taught at Alchemy!

This class is held in the print studio in the main art building on the AAC campus. Directions and parking information will be included in your confirmation email.

Registration: Please register early if you are able, as it helps us to assure that classes meet their minimums in order to run! If you register more than three weeks before this class begins, a 20% early bird discount will automatically be applied to your ticket at checkout.

A Note on Ticket Pricing: We are experimenting with offering sliding scale tickets in order to keep our classes accessible to as many community members as possible. There are three price tiers. Sustaining tickets help us continue to invest in programming. Full price tickets cover the costs associated with running classes. Accessibility tickets are priced below what it costs for us to run a class. If the cost of a full price ticket is a hardship, we encourage you to purchase a sliding scale ticket. If you can pay the full price or sustaining price, please choose that option so we can keep providing arts programming to the community.
