FORAGING for FOOD, FIRE and FIBRE is a brand new hands-on 1 day workshop where we explore a diverse range of locally growing plants that we can utilise as a source of food, for traditional fire lighting methods and for making string and fibre.
The focus on the first part of the day is Foraging for wild FOOD Includes;
Native bushtucker found right here on site in a bushland environment
Common garden and pasture weeds
Introduced/ naturalised shrubs.
We begin our learning by embarking on a short foraging walk along the banks of the upper Tweed river and surrounding bushland. The walking component is relatively short, less then 1km…there is lots of stopping and learning along the way.
On the walk we'll learn all about;
A broad range of local and introduced bushfoods
Toxic/harmful plants and the dangers of incorrect identification
Sustainable harvesting practise, how to collect plant material from native bushland without having an adverse effect on the environment.
After the walk we'll have a short tea/coffee break (provided) before learning all about the abundance of edible weeds that we have growing in our gardens and pasture.
After a lunch break we'll take a hands-on approach to discovering the art of creating FIRE through friction.
What's included;
Learn what local plants are best suited for friction fire Tinder bundles, what's best to use and how to prepare
How to make and prepare a fire lighting kit
Tip's and tricks to creating fire
We then put our new knowledge into practice and create fire using only local plants, a little bit of hard work and a sprinkling of magic
Finally we move onto looking at a range of plants to use and process into cordage and FIBRE for weaving.
Different plants used
How to sustainably harvest
Process plant materials using a range of methods including fire or retting inner bark.
Learn how to turn these fibres into cordage (usable string)
