For Quail Ridge is a live sound installation exploring the sonic qualities of space, ritual observation, and the boundaries between individuals and the non-human communities we inhabit.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
0: This piece is outdoors so if it rains we will not be able to perform--please stay tuned! There are two scheduled performances on 3/21 and 4/4.
1: The piece is one hour long, as is the hike if hiking at a moderate pace. We will aim to begin by 1:00 but some things may be weather dependent.
2: Parking is EXTREMELY limited. Please plan to carpool! We only have space for a dozen or so cars, so depending on RSVP’s we may need to work out alternative parking solutions/shuttles. Please RSVP and plan on arriving at least a few minutes early to be able to be where you'd like to be when the piece begins.
3: The piece is designed to be hiked through, and the hike is somewhat strenuous. (See maps!) However, you will be able to experience the full piece from any point along the trail at any time—including from the field station near the parking areas without needing to hike at all. Please use your best judgment when setting out, and bring a water bottle!
4: While this is not a traditional concert setting, please do your best to treat the space as you might during a more traditional classical concert; i.e. please do not speak to, or otherwise interact with the performers during the performance, even if they do not appear to be playing anything at that time. Perhaps most importantly we ask that you remain silent, and if hiking in a group please limit conversation to only essential communication. It's a big space and while some sounds are loud, others are very soft, and can easily be covered by even quiet conversation. I hope that you will take the opportunity to experience the place and the piece in relative silence and solitude.
5: This is a hike in a wilderness area. Please be wary that you are sharing the space with a number of other living things, not all of whom respond positively to being interacted with. Quail Ridge is host to rattlesnakes, ticks, and poison oak. Please stay on the trail! Exercise due caution even when on clearly marked paths. The trail is marked and maps will be available. Long pants and boots are highly recommended.
6: Cell phone service is EXTREMELY limited. Some folks will have walkie talkies in case of emergency, so if you are in need of immediate assistance make yourself known and someone will be able to call for help.
7: We will have a few vehicles available to transport folks around the preserve in the case of an emergency. However, these will disrupt the piece so we will avoid using them while the piece is being performed except in the unlikely event of an emergency. If you find yourself unable to continue the hike and in need of non-emergency transport back to the field station or your car you can stay put, continue to enjoy the piece, and we can pick you up after the piece is over. However this may take some time. If you are in an emergency situation please do not hesitate to find and or request assistance as loudly and disruptively as you need to.
8: There will be a sign in and sign out sheet--please fill it out! This is so that we know nobody has gotten lost during the hike.
