with musician and artist Manuel Padro
About this Event
Move to the rhythms of Puerto Rican music through paint and brush.
Manuel Padro is a musician, artist, and researcher with a passion for Bomba. You may recognize him from the recent “Know Your Folk” exhibition at the Chase Home Museum, where his musical instrument display, "Marcando el Ritmo," was featured. As a high school graduate, Manuel promised his Puerto Rican grandfather that he would learn Puerto Rican music. His grandfather then bought him a cuatro, a 10-string guitar and one of three national instruments of Puerto Rico.
Take home your own unique, hand-painted maraca! As a crucial percussive instrument in Puerto Rican music, maracas drive the beat in genres from salsa to Bomba. In this lively workshop, you’ll decorate your own maraca, turning it into a personalized piece of folk art. After your creation is complete, the celebration begins. Manuel will guide you and your new instrument through the foundational rhythms of Bomba. You’ll learn to play three distinct rhythms and leave with access to curated playlists to continue your musical journey.
