About this Event

THE URBAN FOREST - PORTLAND, OREGON

If Trees Could Dream? Is an audio project in progress as part of Liz Myers’s “Focused Music Workshop” being hosted this summer at Portland State University. Found throughout the City of Portland are various designated Heritage Trees, some of which are hundreds of feet high and 300+ years old. Including the famous “Monkey Puzzle Tree”, some of these are non-native species who were brought to Portland as part of the World’s Fair in 1905. Planted on residential and commercial spaces, these trees thrive in the Portland weather and add to the cooling canopy in the summers.

Liz Myers, noted composer of music for many commercial projects, will be giving a workshop consisting of two classes beginning on July 18th and returning 4 weeks later to record the music created by the students. Each student will be given a prompt of one of the Heritage Trees and will write a 3-5 minute composition for Piano Trio (piano, violin and cello.) The music will answer the question of “What if trees could dream?” from the point of view of this particular species.

The instruction will include tips on how to make your writing authentically idiomatic of each instrument. String writing advice will be given by Portland cellist/teacher Diane Chaplin. Compositional feedback and tips will be given by the Instructor with the students returning on August 22nd for a read through by Portland State musicians. Performances will be recorded for the students’ portfolios.
