About this Event
"When creative eyes encounter a space, what do they see and how do they evaluate what's before them?
We posed that question to artists Kris Walker and Colleen Woolpert after encountering work completed by each in the former Lee Paper Company paper mill, located in Vicksburg.
As we explored and talked about the work they created while on site, the number of location similarities were uncanny - elements of the space are very compelling to artists - but the perspective and approach of each photographer to the subject matter varies greatly.
After some consideration, we decided that there is a fascinating conversation to be had related to how professional background and life experience frame artistic practice.
Focal Points is the show that sprung from that premise.
Kris Walker approached his work in the mill with a mindset opposite than that of his commercial architectural photography. Instead of seeing space, Kris looked for the basic elements of design: shape, value, lines. Walker approached the building hoping to show its age, not the new, modern constructions he normally shoots. Working in black & white emphasizes the shapes and textures, as opposed to the designer’s color and material choices.
Colleen Woolpert's way of looking springs from life circumstances: she was born an identical twin on Halloween, and her twin struggled with depth perception due to misaligned eyes. Woolpert is fascinated with vision—functionally and metaphorically—and has a penchant for the uncanny. As an artist, she hopes to activate doubt, double-takes, and discovery. What can we know from surface impressions alone? Perhaps there’s more if we look deeper."
