Get your hands dirty with the bonsai pros to repot and style your own Kyoto Serissa bonsai tree. Take it home with confidence and pro tips.
About this Event

Learn basic bonsai techniques to start transforming plants into bonsai. Learn why it is important to have a good soil mix, root-prune, repot, and choose the right angles when repotting. Take this knowledge home and apply it to other plants as well.

In this class we will work on the Serissa japonica also known as 'Fumi' (here at the bonsai shop).

This class is for intermediate to advanced plant parents. The Serissa is best suited for someone with bonsai experience and lots of patience.

I’m Fumi, the Kyoto Serissa, and native to open woodlands and wet meadows in southeast Asia. I'm from the genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. I sport little white flowers and bloom often throughout the year, which is how I got my nickname, ‘Tree of a Thousand Stars.’ I like bright indirect light and get watered every 5-7 days. Water by submerging my pot up to the rim for 5-10 minutes and let drain.

Symbolism: The Serissa's Wood element symbolizes growth and transformation, ultimately nurturing resilience, adaptation, and personal growth. Its Chi, 'Zhen,' stands for constancy and stability, with a strong power to cultivate an environment of strength and protection against negative energy.

TOTAL SEATS: 6

Materials Provided: One handmade bonsai planter in small white, one bonsai tree, soil, decorative rocks, necessary tools for repotting. Other materials on site available for purchase.

About the instructor/s:

Matthew Puntigam lived and worked in Tokyo for 7 years learning bonsai techniques and garden skills while apprenticing at a garden design and bonsai shop. He opened Dandy Farmer in 2016 to bring the art of bonsai to the NYC community.
