"Brother Scoundrels of Early Florida: The West Florida Rebellion of 1804"
The early United States was a time of statesman like George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, and Thomas Jefferson. It was also a time of scoundrels, men who use the nation’s independence to seek their own fortunes, including three brothers in the early 1800s living in Spanish West Florida. Living on the border of Spain and the United States, the Kemper brothers turned a personal business grievance into a rebellion against Spanish rule and a bid for independence. David Head illustrates the complex loyalties of the region and U.S.-Spanish relations in this program.

David Head is an associate lecturer of history at the University of Central Florida. He has published four books, including Privateers of the Americas: Spanish American Privateering from the United States in the Early Republic, The Golden Age of Piracy: The Rise, Fall, and Enduring Popularity of Pirates, and A Crisis of Peace: George Washington, the Newburgh Conspiracy, and the Fate of the American Revolution, which was a finalist for the 2020 George Washington Book Prize.
