About this Event
In this hands-on training workshop, volunteers will learn about basic horseshoe crab biology, procedures for sampling breeding populations of horseshoe crabs, and procedures for measuring and tagging horseshoe crabs.
Volunteers will be familiarized with sampling procedures, gear and understand how the data they collect is used by the FWC and other agencies. Volunteers who complete the workshop will be eligible to volunteer for the Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch Citizen Science program, but are not required to do so.

REQUIRED Prior to 4/1/2026: Enroll in and complete the Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch virtual training. The online course covers all the classroom content and will allow us to focus on the hands-on practice. Email organizer with proof of completion or bring a copy of your certificate to the training.
The virtual training covers:
- Orientation to Horseshoe Crab Biology and Ecological Importance, Florida Horseshoe Crab Watch Program, and Horseshoe Crab Management
- Training Videos
Please allow a total of 2 hours to complete the virtual training, you can break it up into smaller chunks if you wish.

12:45 PM: Intros & Virtual training content review
1:30 PM: Skill Practice Stations and Q&A
3:00 PM: Prepare to depart for field session, walk/carpool to Fenimore Beach
3:15-4:30 PM: Field Session - High Tide at 3:32 PM - beach sampling and tagging live horseshoe crabs (conditions permitting)
