This full-day workshop introduces students to the expressive world of watercolor while exploring the timeless tradition of floral symbolism. Through guided demonstrations and hands-on practice, participants will learn foundational watercolor techniques such as washes, blending, layering, and lifting.Using flowers as our inspiration, we’ll explore how to create simple yet expressive botanical compositions and use the “language of flowers” as a storytelling device. By the end of the class, students will not only understand watercolor basics but will also have created a unique piece that conveys a personal or symbolic botanical story.
Student Materials List
Paper
• Fabriano Artistico Hot Press Watercolor Paper – 9” x 12” pad (or similar size)
Paints
• Daniel Smith Watercolor Dot Card(s) – Primary or Essentials Set
Brushes
• Round brushes: sizes 4, 6, and 8
• 1" flat wash brush (optional)
Palette
• Small watercolor mixing palette (plastic or ceramic)
• Or a white ceramic plate
Water & Towels
• Two water containers (one for rinsing, one for clean water)
• Paper towels or clean cotton rag
Pencil & Eraser
• HB or 2B graphite pencil
• Kneaded eraser or white plastic eraser
Optional (Recommended)
• Board to tape paper down
• Artist’s or painter’s tape (low tack)
• Small spray bottle (to re-wet paints)
