About this Event
Hosted by Civic Works and presented by Scott Shane, journalist and author of Flee North, for a talk about the self-educated shoemaker in the nation’s capital, Thomas Smallwood, who enabled hundreds of enslaved people to escape North to freedom. In Smallwood’s time, Baltimore was, for the enslaved, a shipping port to hard labor-unto-death in the deep south. But Smallwood and others used Baltimore safe houses and Maryland’s countryside to direct people to the free states and Canada. Mr. Shane will tell us how Smallwood and his collaborators did it.
Mr. Shane will have copies of his book F, onsite and available for purchase.
