About this Event

Flamm x VASW: Remote Working
Friday 12th July / 10am - 4pm
The Beat, Bodmin, Cornwall

Booking: Free to attend, places allocated on a first come first served basis (capacity of 35). A limited number of travel bursaries available (allocated as spaces are booked).

Part of VASW's ‘How Can I Stay? (I don't want to not want to stay)’ programme.

A one-day event of panel discussions and breakout activities exploring the realities of working as a creative practitioner in rural places. Lead by artists from different career stages, creative producers, and community organisers, we will share what challenges we face as rural creative practitioners and discuss innovative ways of working that result from our rurality (whether intentional or unintentional!). Whether you are still a student or an experienced arts professional, this event is an opportunity for you to hear others’ perspectives and share your own.

Taking place in Bodmin (where Flamm will happen in October 2025) the ‘Remote Working’ event will conclude with some drinks for artists to meet creatives from other disciplines as well as some cultural and community organisers in Bodmin.

Key information:

  • There are 35 places available allocated on a first-come-first-served basis
  • It is free to attend but participants will need to manage and cover the costs of their own travel.
  • There are a limited number of travel bursaries available and when booking a place to attend you will be asked to identify if you require a bursary and how much you require (at set amounts). Bursaries will be allocated as tickets are booked on a first-come-first-served basis. It is unlikely that there will be enough budget for everyone to access a bursary.
  • There will be food and drink provided

Venues:

The event will happen across two venues The Beat (Town Wall, Dennison Road, Bodmin, Cornwall PL31 2JU) and IntoBodmin (The Old Library, 10 Lower Bore Street, Bodmin, Cornwall PL31 2JX) - they are within 3min walking distance from each other. The day will start and conclude at The Beat, with some break out sessions during the day take place in IntoBodmin.

Both venues are wheelchair accessible with wheelchair accessible toilet facilities.

Refreshments and a light lunch will be provided.

This event is organised in partnership between Flamm, part of Creative Kernow, and Visual Art South West, with funding from the UK Government via UK Shared Prosperity Fund.

To get to the Beat:

By Car
Bodmin is only 2 miles from the A30. There is no public parking at The Beat or IntoBodmin, but unrestricted street parking is available on nearby Higher Bore Street. The nearest public car parks are Berrycombe Road and Fore Street.

By Train
Bodmin Parkway train station is on the Great Western Railway mainline, but it's 4 miles outside of the town centre. Buses run regularly to the town centre from the station, and the Beat will be a 10-min walk away. A taxi will cost £15 for up to 4 people and £20 for up to 6 people.

We will send out a questionnaire to all attendees about their travel plan, and if we have a good number of people travelling by train, Flamm will arrange a shuttle bus from and to the train station at the beginning and the end of the event.
