Award-winning flutist and bansuri player Lara Wong and flamenco guitarist Melón Jiménez make flamenco their universal musical language to traverse musical territories. Their music ebbs and flows with elegance and emotive power, as they fuse the soul of flamenco with the inventive spirit of jazz, and the rhythmic improvisations of Indian music.
In this special collaborative concert, they will be joined by New-York based jazz cellist, George Crotty. In a constant dialogue between cultures, these three extranordinary artists brings tradition and modernity together through dynamic compositions and vivid improvisation. Dazzling flamenco guitar passages, mystical bansuri melodies and exploratory cello improvisations, come together in this unforgetable performance.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Melón and Lara are both prominent figures in the world music and flamenco scene: Melón has toured extensively with artists like Anoushka Shankar, Richard Bona, Israel Fernandez, and Jorge Pardo, while Lara was awarded best flamenco instrumentalist at Festival Cante de las Minas, making her the first foreign prizewinner at Spain’s principal flamenco festival. Together, they have performed at venues like Vancouver Folk Festival, Blue Note Shanghai, Mundial Montreal, Mariposa Folk, and SunFest.
Canadian cellist George Crotty has forged his own exciting vocabulary, pushing the boundaries of the cello as a jazz instrument. Following his graduation from the Berklee College of Music, Crotty immersed himself in New York’s jazz and world music scenes, playing with several ensembles, such as the Brooklyn Raga Massive, and the Detroit-based National Arab Orchestra. Additionally, he has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with Simon Shaheen, Paquito D’Rivera, Anat Cohen, and Darol Anger.
