Join Crew 1780 and Troop 8 for a Special DedicationWe invite you to join Crew 1780 and Troop 8 as we unveil a Flag Retirement Box at the Abingdon Muster Grounds. This box, along with several other significant enhancements at the site, is a crucial part of an Eagle Project completed by C. Branham, the Vice President of Crew 1780 and a member of Troop 8.
This dedication aligns with the 211th anniversary of the writing of "The Star-Spangled Banner." On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key, a lawyer from Georgetown, found himself aboard a ship in Baltimore’s harbor, witnessing the War of 1812 unfold around him.
Additionally, this date marks the public opening of the Annual Call to Arms at the Abingdon Muster Grounds. The Call to Arms is a yearly celebration of the 1780 Revolutionary War victory at Kings Mountain. This event includes a school field trip for hundreds of students to immerse themselves in colonial Virginia life, bringing history to life through engaging storytelling, demonstrations, and hands-on activities such as bayoneting apples and playing the game of Graces.
