The Flag Institute Golden Jubilee programme continues and we are delighted to announce the People's History Museum will be the location of the Flag Institute AGM and Winter 2021 Conference. This event will see us meeting again in person and with the conference due to be available live online (a Zoom link will be sent to all Flag Institute members prior to the event).
The People's History Museum is the UK's national museum of democracy. The museum's extensive trade union and political banner collection is the largest of its type in the world, some of which will be on display at the museum's 2021 exhibitions when the Flag Institute visits in November.

International visual artist, Luke Jerram’s multidisciplinary practice involves the creation of sculptures, installations and live arts projects. Living in the UK but working internationally since 1997, Jerram has created a number of extraordinary art projects which have excited and inspired people around the world. Luke is now known globally for his innovative arts practice and large scale public artworks. Luke will present his artworks and discuss those specifically which involve the use of flags.

The Black Country Flag Row: Representing everyone?
The Black Country flag, chosen by public competition in 2012, has been enthusiastically adopted across the region, becoming a highly visible rallying point for an often overlooked post-industrial area. The very public and passionate furore surrounding the flag's contested symbolism, however, offers valuable insights into the importance of flags and other symbols in defining (or redefining) identity as well as posing tough questions about how consultation about and selection of local and regional representations should be conducted in order to be inclusive of diverse viewpoints and experiences.

Compared with many other countries, England is a mini-municipal vexi-desert. John will describe his partially successful attempt to remedy this grave cultural deficiency in his home town, located in Hertfordshire's deep south.

President's Drinks
President's Drinks will be held after the conference at The Oast House, a 16th Century hop roasting house in the heart of Spinningfields district and a three-minute walk from the People's History Museum, is to host.

The official Flag Institute hotel for the weekend is Premier Inn Manchester City Centre West, a four minute walk from People's History Museum.
