The Des Moines Big Band, a storied ensemble that goes back to the 1950s, has played with some of the greatest names in jazz, from legends like Clark Terry to some of the more local household names such as Scott Smith. Led by renowned trumpeter/arranger Dave Rezek, this organization is in residence at Noce on Wednesday nights.

Blake Shaw, a versatile musician hailing from Iowa City, is a double and electric bassist, vocalist, cellist, composer/arranger, and educator who brings a rich tapestry of influences to his craft. In 2010, Blake earned his AA degree from Kirkwood before going on to obtain his BM in Classical Double Bass Performance in 2013 and his MA in Jazz Composition/Performance in 2017, both from the University of Iowa. You can currently find him teaching in Cedar Rapids as the Director of Jazz Studies at the Mount Mercy Campus of St Ambrose University. In addition to his academic and performance pursuits, Blake actively contributes to the music community as a board member of the Iowa City Jazz Fest, the Entertainment Director for the Iowa City Pride Festival, and the Friday Night Concert Series in Iowa City. He also regularly serves as a guest artist, coaching ensembles in schools spanning from middle school to college levels.
Despite his demanding teaching schedule, Blake can be found performing close to every week with a diverse array of bands, ranging from solo acts to big bands. Driven by ambition and a deep passion for the art, Blake's journey as a bassist has led him through a diverse range of genres and collaborations with a wide spectrum of musical artists and creatives, all of which he considers his true artistic home.
