About this Event
Total Eclipse Program at Wells Branch Community Library
By now most of us know that a total solar eclipse is passing directly over central Texas April 8th. Do you know why solar eclipses happen, and why this one is so special? With sunlight being essential, the disappearance of the Sun from the earth was a dreadful event that shocked pre-modern societies. How long have people been watching eclipses, trying to explain them? On April 5th, 6:30 PM, the Wells Branch Community Library hosts a presentation, “Eclipse, Myth and Science” using hands-on experiments to answer these questions. And, there’s much more!
Before the advent of telescopes, satellites, and space travel, people had no way of understanding eclipses. So, they conjured up supernatural tales to explain them. We’ll learn about these ancient people by hearing some of their bizarre tales.
Our presenter, Maggie Goodman, holds a BA in Theatre Arts from UT Austin, and is the former director of the Johnson City Library. As a STEM educator, she delights in discovering the mystery of things. Her passion is performing!
Saving the best for last, everyone will be encouraged to write their own eclipse myth or make and take home, a chalk drawing of the sun’s corona. Both activities demonstrate the power and mystery of the sun!
