Ring in the new year in the great outdoors with a guided first day hike at Fort Kearny State Recreation Area. Meet at the south trailhead of the Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail at 10 a.m. on Jan. 1 for an easy, 1.8-mile hike on a paved, flat trail to the south railroad bridge. Visitors can keep an eye out for winter wildlife while learning about the history of the park on this one-hour hike.In 2026, Nebraska Game and Parks will join the nation in celebrating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. This milestone is a unique opportunity to connect Nebraskans with the state’s rich natural, cultural, and outdoor heritage. To commemorate the occasion, park staff will be handing out free 250th Anniversary First Day Hike stickers, while supplies last!
Participants should dress for the weather and remember to bring snacks and water, and binoculars, if desired. Friendly pets are allowed on a six-foot leash. A valid 2026 Nebraska state park vehicle permit is required for entry and can be purchased at the park.
