Lee Roy Young, author of Lee Young: Memoirs of a Black Seminole Ranger, will share his story at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at the historic Allen Christian Church, 252 E. St. Mary Dr., in Allen.
Following four years of service In the U.S. Navy, Young was hired by the Texas Department of Public Safety to serve as part of the Capitol security in Austin. While in Texas capitol, he also earned a degree in sociology, specializing in criminology. Following this, he became a patrolman. Then in 1988, through a highly competitive process, Young became the first Black Seminole Texas Ranger, earning a badge that he wore with immense honor.
Under the leadership of Juan Caballo many Black Seminoles fled to Mexico in1849 to protect their freedoms. The men later became scouts for the U.S. Calvary along the Texas Mexico border. Four of the scouts received the U.S. Medal of Honor during that period. Young is a descendant of one of those Medal of Honor recipients, Sgt. John Ward.
