A true pioneer, Gilliam was the first African American columnist at The Commercial Appeal and the first Black television anchor in Memphis, before making history again by founding WLOK as the city’s first Black-owned and locally owned radio station.Through candid storytelling, Gilliam will reflect on his journey from Yale University to national recognition in broadcasting, his work in public service, and the creation of platforms that elevated gospel music, civic awareness, and community pride. Under his leadership, WLOK has become a national model of faith-based programming and cultural celebration, including the beloved Stone Soul Picnic.
