Fireside Chat | Simplicity & Balance with Dr. Shukurō Manabe
Presented by the Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan, in Collaboration with The Japan Commerce Association of Washington, D.C. and The Washington Japanese Heritage Center.
Join us for a special fireside chat with physicist, meteorologist, climatologist, and co-recipient of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics Dr. Syukuro Manabe. Following a brief talk on his research, Dr. Manabe will be joined by Mr. Masaharu Shimizu for an engaging conversation, exploring Dr. Manabe's guiding principle of "simplicity & balance."
Dr. Syukuro Manabe is a distinguished scientist renowned for his contributions to the fields of physics, meteorology, and climatology. After receiving his BA, MA, and DSc degree from the University of Tokyo, Dr. Manabe later came to the United States to join the General Circulation Research Section of the U.S. Weather Bureau (now the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory of NOAA) until 1997. Following this, he served as Director of the Global Warming Research Division at the Frontier Research System for Global Change in Japan from 1997 to 2001. In 2002, he returned to the United States as a visiting research collaborator at Princeton University. Currently, he holds the position of senior meteorologist at the university. Additionally, he served as a specially invited professor at Nagoya University from December 2007 to March 2014.
Throughout his career, Dr. Manabe has made significant advancements in our understanding of Earth's climate systems. Particularly, his development of three-dimensional atmospheric models and coupled atmosphere-ocean models has profoundly impacted climate science in the areas of atmospheric dynamics and climate modeling. His groundbreaking research has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 2021. Dr. Manabe's work inspires generations of scientists and has played a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of climate change and its implications for our planet.
