This is a traditional in-person course that requires students to attend two sessions.


Thursday March 19th 6pm-9pm

Saturday March 28th 8am-4pm.


Students are welcome to skip the first session only if they successfully complete the online course. Online course completion certificates must be presented to only attend the second session.


Materials will be handed out and some classroom instruction will be done on Thursday night, followed by an 8-hour skills and exam session on Saturday.


There is a $10 fee to help cover costs, even if only attending the second session.


Requirements for attending this class are:

• Students 12 years and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

• For the Saturday session, bring your completed workbook (to be passed out Thursday) or completed online certificate, and your survival kit (to be discussed Thursday).

• Families may share a kit for class purposes, but it is strongly recommended that each person have their own. The kit must include a pocketknife, fire starting kit, magnetic compass, whistle, method of water treatment, a small flashlight, a signaling device, a large contractor trash bag, food, cordage, first aid supplies, and a survival blanket (space blanket).

• Bring your own lunch on Saturday. To keep things moving we will eat during class.

• Bring your own snacks, water or drinks.

• Bring a pencil/pen to take the test.

• Families are welcome to sit together. Parents accompanying their children do not have to register unless they intend to take the class themselves.

• This Skills and Exam Session will include the follow topics:

  • Survival/first aid
  • Landowner relations
  • Hunter ethics
  • Maine hunting laws
  • Hands-on practice of safe firearms handling
  • Hands-on instruction of map and compass and outdoor survival


•Students must pass a 50-question exam with a score of at least 70%.
