The three pieces in this programme are just three branches of the huge tree that was to become 20th century music. Part of a weekend of workshops, talks and two concerts with Torbay Symphony Orchestra.
Programme:
Rachmaninov – Piano Concerto No.2
Stravinsky – Firebird (1919 version)
Lili Boulager – D’un matin de printemps
Debussy – ‘L’Apres midi d’un faune’
Soloist Francesca Orlando is a British-Italian pianist who has performed internationally both as soloist and chamber musician across many European cities including London, Copenhagen, Vienna, Budapest, Malta, Florence and Rome.
Francesca was awarded an Open-Academy Fellowship at the Royal Academy of Music, where she completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Solo Piano Performance under the tutelage of Prof. Joanna MacGregor and Diana Ketler respectively. During her undergraduate studies she was a recipient of the Miriam Duncan Scholarship and Constance Bastard Memorial Scholarship.
Torbay Symphony Orchestra’s strapline is ‘Classical. Contemporary. Community’ and their work in the community is one thing which sets them apart. The orchestra is well known in the local area for our primary school workshops where they passionately explain the positive role music plays in our lives, introduce the instruments of the orchestra, and encourage children to engage with music. During the year, TSO puts on large-scale versions of these workshops at the famous Dartington Hall, where they also give children a taster session on an instrument of their choice and encourage them to sit amongst the orchestra during a performance of a symphonic work. The feedback from these workshops is always fantastic and many children are inspired to begin learning an instrument.
A sense of community is at the heart of the orchestra, and in 2023, TSO was thrilled to be nominated for and then to win the Royal Philharmonic Society ‘Inspiration Award’. This is the Society’s only award for amateur groups and it seeks to highlight and recognise the impact amateur groups can have in the community and to reward those who challenge themselves to go beyond the norm.
Sunday 1 December is a relaxed performance with families especially welcome.
