About the Work
Set in 1920s Mexico City, Fire Never Dies follows Tina Modotti’s artistic rise, her relationships with figures like Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, and her eventual shift from celebrated photographer to committed anti-fascist. After abandoning her camera, Modotti dedicated her life to political activism, including directing the Red Aid Hospital during the Spanish Civil War.
Told in twenty-five episodic scenes from film noir sequences of Berlin espionage to naturalistic depictions of Mexico’s artistic circles, the piece blends theatre, movement, and visual design to portray a woman torn between art, love, and political conviction.
Through Modotti’s journey, the work asks urgent questions: What is the purpose of art in the face of fascism? Can creativity serve the poor? What is the personal cost of militancy?
