About this Event
The Formerly Incarcerated People's Performance Project (FIPPP) is back on stage in May with our Summer Workshop Performances at Berkeley Rep's School of Theatre with 12 stories from 12 performers on Friday, May 17, Saturday, May 18, Saturday, May 25, Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1. And tickets are NOW ON SALE!
These are our first performances at Berkeley Rep as their inaugural company-in-residence and they will be the stepping stone to our next full festival in the fall of 2025. See powerful solo performances by Christina Aanestad, Tony Cyprien, Algiin Ford, Anthony Jefferson "AJ," Freddy Lee Johnson, Pamela Ann Keane, Pastor Ronnie Muniz, Anthony Puthuff, Juan Salinas, Al Sasser, Scott Schell, and Tylon Sizemore.
We are proud to bring back our popular post-show Ask Me Anything panels with our performers and local activists in the criminal justice space taking questions from the audience and discussing the realities of incarceration, second chances, and the role of public policy in recidivism.
Our panels for the Summer Workshop Performances will be the SF Jails AMA Panel highlighting our partnership with Berkeley Rep to bring storytelling classes inside SF Jails, the Health Care AMA Panel in partnership with UCSF, with a conversation on health care inequities and the carceral system, with Jennifer James from UCSF, and a Youth AMA Panel with Senai Gebretensae to talk about the mission of CURYJ and “unlocking the leadership of young people to dream beyond bars.”
At FIPPP, we believe live performance and theater should be accessible to everyone. So we are offering sliding scale priced tickets (from $15-$25) and also have a few generously donated tickets to ensure everyone who wants to join us, can join us. No one will be turned away from FIPPP's Summer Workshop Performances due to a lack of funds. We would love to have you in our audience to see these powerful performances.
If you would like to receive one or more free tickets that have been donated by other patrons, please send us an email at [email protected] and we will work to get you into the show of your choosing discreetly and confidentially. If you would like to secure a seat for someone who may be short on funds, you can pay it forward by purchasing a Pay-It-Forward ticket when buying your own ticket.
There is no age minimum for attendance at our festival. However, these stories include frank portrayals of the causes and impacts of incarceration, including descriptions of physical violence, substance abuse, and racial trauma. That said, these stories are rich with humanity, insight, and redemption, and are highly recommended for teenagers and up.
Produced by Mark Kenward, with co-direction by Rebecca Fisher, Wayne Harris, and Mark McGoldrick, and additional coaching by Dan Hoyle, Candace Johnson, and Dylan Russell, each FIPPP performance is crafted using improvisation and storytelling techniques and each of our fellows brings their own unique experience of circumstance, heartache, learning, and redemption.
With the pressing issues of mass incarceration, solitary confinement, reentry, and justice reform on both the local and national agendas, these stories of incarceration and reinvention give an invaluable insight into the conditions in Pr*son, the post-Pr*son experience, and life behind bars for the people who serve time and their families that serve along with them.
