Please note that this is a free event and all sewing materials are provided
Almost year ago a collaborative sewing activity toook place at PRONI to remember, through stitch and conversation , the 80th Anniversary of VE Day , 8 May 2025.Since then ,with over 200 participants, and using pre loved fabricsand gifted linens , regular sewing sessions and contact a unique piece of work has emerged . We celebrated VE Day , and remembered those liberated some time later in the Far East for VJDay ,You Are Not Forgotten and for Rememberance Day we acknowledged not only those lost through conflict but also those who have passed away who were born during WW2, at that session estimated that 29,500 Stitches was a stitch a day for 80 years . The piece has grown and shares some amazing stories of both love , hardship , separation and loss .For Internatiinal Women’s Day 2026 with a theme of Give to Gain , we stitched in shades of purple to remember women who we cherished admired and respected . Around the edge of the textile is a deep red edge embroidered in white, a consistent reminder of the famous Morse Code symbol for V, for Victory ( dot dot dot dash) that was broadcast to announce the ceasing of hostility in Europe . One participant has painstakingly undertaken this task and now the embroidery and stitching down of the edge is complete .
Please join us to complete the finishing off , there’s some embroidery left to do , and also we need to record all the details that are hand written on the white luggage labels . It will be a lovely opportunity for anyone who has taken part to drop in and see all the work .
This piece when completed will be gifted to PRONI and we hope that Stitch Your Bit will continue to run as an inspirational collaborative stitching project .
