Financial Literacy for Teens in Care

Teens who age out of foster care face significant disadvantages in financial literacy. Being in care leads to a lack of financial education, higher risks of financial instability, lower earnings overall, and difficulties with basic tasks like opening bank accounts compared to their peers. These challenges lead to lower financial participation (Less likely to have basic accounts), housing and employment instability, and missed opportunities in terms of scholarships and financial aid for higher education.
FFAN is partnering with Edmonton State Bank in an effort to bridge the gaps presented in care!
We are offering a FREE course for teens ages 15 - 18 who are currently in foster or kinship care. This course will run for a 6 month period meeting on the last Monday of each month. Here are a few of the topics the course will cover:
- Basic Accounts
- Budgeting
- Credit Scores & Why They Matter (this will be a little talking and explaining followed by a game)
- Paychecks & Taxes
- What is insurance? (Private Health Insurance & Car Insurance)
- Quick Tips, Little Wins, Resources, and Things to Avoid
This course will be led by Sasha Craighead of Edmonton State Bank:
Sasha works at Edmonton State Bank where she helps individuals and families navigate everyday financial decisions with confidence. She is passionate about financial literacy and believes money conversations should be practical, honest, and judgement-free. As a parent and community advocate, Sasha understands that financial stress often shows up during life’s hardest transitions. She is grateful for the opportunity to partner with local organizations to support parents, teens, and young adults by giving them tools and knowledge that build confidence and stability.
*** We have room for 10 kiddos for this initial 6 month course. Please use the google docs link I will be posting in the discussion thread to sign up. If we get more than 10 signed up, I will put the additional kiddos on our second 6 month waiting list and notify the parents. The course will be about an hour each night and we are allotting an additional time period afterward for questions and conversation. We will have some snacks and drinks as well!
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns...
We are super excited to be able to bring this new program to our local community...
Thank you for your support.
