About this Event

Film synopsis:

Edinburgh, 1892. Upright lawyer Gabriel Utterson is concerned by his good friend Dr Henry Jekyll’s obsession with the mysterious and dangerous Mr. Hyde. He sets out to uncover his identity and save Jekyll. His search for the truth takes him from high society to the shadows of the underground vaults where workers shelter and Hyde hunts. What must Utterson do and who must he become to defeat the monster who is threatening everything he desires?

A National Theatre of Scotland production, filmed largely within the atmospheric setting of Edinburgh’s historic Leith, The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde was originally presented in February 2022 as a live, cinematic experience. Embracing the duality of the storyline and the period authenticity, the film was shot in black and white.

A film by Hope Dickson Leach and Vlad Butucea, returns to Edinburgh-born writer Robert Louis Stevenson’s original story which was published in 1886. Lorn MacDonald takes on the role of Utterson. Lorn won the Best Actor Scottish BAFTA award for his portrayal of Spanner in the film Beats. His TV roles include Bridgerton, and Shetland. Dr Jekyll is performed by Scottish actor Henry Pettigrew. Henry’s roles include the TV series The Crown and Guilt.

Film running time: 84 minutes.

A question and answer session with the creatives involved in the making of the film will follow the screening. This event is not suitable for children under 14 years old.
