Join us for the Opening Night of the 33rd African Diaspora International Film Festival — an evening of art, culture, and connection in Harlem.
Watch The Dutchman — a bold new adaptation of Amiri Baraka’s explosive 1964 play that confronts race, desire, and power in America. A cinematic conversation that’s as provocative today as ever.
This 2025 psychological thriller The Dutchman is a modern and surreal adaptation of Amiri Baraka’s explosive 1964 play. Clay (André Holland), a successful but troubled Black businessman, finds himself entangled in a tense, psychological game of cat-and-mouse after encountering a seductive and mysterious white woman, Lula (Kate Mara), on a New York subway.
The encounter quickly escalates as Lula subjects Clay to racially charged provocations, forcing him to confront his identity, assimilation, and the social scripts Black men navigate in America.
The film, featuring a strong ensemble cast including Zazie Beetz and Stephen McKinley Henderson, reinterprets a seminal work of the Black Arts Movement with urgent relevance for today’s audiences—culminating in a haunting and unforgettable climax.
