About this Event
Film Screening: Intruder in the Dust
Black Images on Film and TV in Brazil and the USA
Filmed on location in Mississippi, this landmark drama follows Lucas Beauchamp (Juano Hernández), an independent Black landowner who refuses to act subservient to a lynch mob. This authentic representation is a radical departure from the servile caricatures of the era and stands in stark contrast to the manipulated images outlined in Color Adjustment.
The film stars Juano Hernández, the first Afro-Latino star in Hollywood, in a performance that earned him a Golden Globe nomination in 1950 for "New Star of the Year – Actor," a historic achievement at the time.
