Pioneering Polish mountain climber Wanda Rutkiewicz disappeared in the Himalayas in 1992.
'Wanda Rutkiewicz. The Last Expedition' was the opening film of the largest documentary film festival in Poland, Millenium Docs Against Gravity.
The film's world premiere took place at one of the most important A-class festivals in Amsterdam, IDFA.
The film appeared in Polish cinemas last autumn, where it broke the record in terms of audience, reaching 50,000 viewers. It is nominated for the Eagles (Polish Oscar) award in the categories of best documentary film and best editing.
What happened on that final climb? Filmmaker and mountaineer Eliza Kubarska traces Wanda’s footsteps on the world’s highest peaks in a journey into the mystery surrounding the fate of the first woman to summit K2.
Could Wanda be still alive, in a monastery in Tibet?
Weaving together Wanda’s own, previously unseen diaries, audio and video archives from her Himalayan expeditions, interviews with legendary climbers, Sherpas, Buddhist nuns and monks, this is a riveting account of the emotional struggles and aspirations of a woman who rose above a world that often sought to limit her and charted her own path to freedom.
About film director and guest of Q&A:
Eliza Kubarska - mountaineer, director. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts and the Andrzej Wajda Film School in Warsaw. Her documentary films are awarded at prestigious festivals around the world. One of the few women in the world who opened new climbing routes on several hundred metres high vertical walls. She climbed in the Karakoram, the Himalayas, Greenland.

Is it possible, as Wanda's mother believed, that her daughter left Kanchenjunga and hid in some Buddhist monastery?
The question itself is sensational, but it is not even the question, but rather the way in which Kubarska asks it, and to whom she asks it, that makes us get the most interesting document about the mountains in recent years.
Kubarska does not ask the rational Western world about Wanda's fate. Instead, she talks about it with people who have been associated with the Himalayas for centuries, who were born and died in the shadow of Kanchenjunga, who do not rule out a miracle and without blinking an eye consider what Rutkiewicz's life in the monastery could have been like.
Thanks to this approach, "The Last Expedition" retains a mystery that is often blurred in other films about mountains, filled with drone shots, which will probably replace AI-generated shots in a few years.

Pionierka polskiego himalaizmu Wanda Rutkiewicz zaginęła w Himalajach w 1992 roku.
"Wanda Rutkiewicz. "Ostatnia wyprawa" była filmem otwarcia największego festiwalu filmów dokumentalnych w Polsce – Millenium Docs Against Gravity. Światowa premiera filmu odbyła się na jednym z najważniejszych festiwali klasy A w Amsterdamie, IDFA.
Film pojawił się w polskich kinach jesienią ubiegłego roku, gdzie pobił rekord oglądalności, docierając do 50 000 widzów.

Czy to możliwe, jak sądziła matka Wandy, że jej córka opuściła Kanczendzongę i ukryła się w jakimś buddyjskim klasztorze?
Pytanie samo w sobie jest sensacyjne, ale to nie samo pytanie, a raczej sposób, w jaki Kubarska je zadaje i do komu je zadaje, sprawia, że otrzymujemy najciekawszy dokument o górach ostatnich lat.
Kubarska nie pyta racjonalnego świata zachodniego o los Wandy. Za to rozmawia o tym z ludźmi, którzy od wieków związani są z Himalajami, którzy rodzili się w cieniu Kanczendzongi, którzy nie wykluczają cudu i bez mrugnięcia okiem zastanawiają się, jak mogło wyglądać życie Rutkiewicza w klasztorze.
