About this Event

The community-based documentary film Duj Džene – Ketten – Two Together (2025) explores the collaboration between Roma and non-Roma citizens of a post-industrial small town in Hungary. They design, write, edit, and publish the collaborative ethnographic journal together, with support from members of the OTHE Collaborative Ethnography group from Budapest. The film tells the stories around the gestation of the journal, which brought together Romani-Hungarian bilingual women from a segregated Roma community with Hungarian-monolingual women from the local majority.

Racialised bilinguals are economically and socially marginalised in most societies, and the prevailing monolingual language ideologies have much to account for, from low-rates of school success to high rates of unemployment. How can we approach these tricky and tenacious problems amidst discourses of systemic racism and racio-linguistic prejudice? Is it possible to overcome mutual suspicion towards each other in an attempt to decrease the spatial, social, and discursive distance between us? What can research contribute to this effort when conceived in a participatory framework through collaborative writing?

The UK premiere of the documentary Duj Džene – Ketten – Two Together is presented by UCL’s Platform for Linguistic and Epistemic Justice and the SSEES Cinema Research Group, in collaboration with the OTHE Collaborative Ethnography group from Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church in Budapest (KRE).

The screening will be introduced by Dr Annabel Tremlett (University of Portsmouth) and followed by a panel discussion on participatory approaches to cinematic and visual representations of Roma.

Panel participants include filmmaker Petra Pantyi, Dr János Imre Heltai (KRE), and visual artist Róbert Czibi (Roma Support Group, London).

Chair: Dr Eszter Tarsoly (UCL SSEES/PLEJ).
