About this Event
Join us as we continue our film screening series, featuring the impactful ‘Small Axe’ episodes directed by UAL alumni and Oscar winner Steve McQueen, telling distinct stories about the experiences of London’s West Indian community from the 1960s to the 1980s.
‘Alex Wheatle’ is based on the true story of award-winning writer Alex Wheatle. After spending his childhood in a mostly white institutional care home without love or family, he discovers a sense of community for the first time in Brixton. There he develops a passion for music and DJing. His journey takes a turn when he is thrown into Pr*son during the Brixton uprising of 1981, prompting him to confront his past and find a path to healing.
After the screening, there will be a chance for refreshments and a brief discussion about the film.
This event is open to all UAL staff and students, each with the opportunity to bring one guest.
Grab your ticket now as seats are limited.
