FILM SAFARI GHANA: THE CHRONICLES OF NINJA (dir. Andrew Leavold, 2024) Join gonzo Aussie filmmaker Andrew (The Search For Weng Weng, Pub: The Movie) Leavold on his most out-there film adventure yet. Watch as he parachutes into a starring role in a slavery-themed action movie on a film set in Wild West Africa, all the while prepping his own four-foot kung fu remake of The Harder They Come with fellow gonzo filmmaker, Ghanian director Samuel K. Nkansah, aka Ninja (B14, African Kung Fu Nazis).
Here in Kumasi, Ghana’s second-largest metropolis and sprawling home to more than three million people, Andrew is adopted by a passion-driven community of film fanatics on the fringe, barely surviving the collapse of West Africa’s film market and making $50 movies every month just to keep the dream of a Kumawood industry alive.
A vibrant, inspiring and often heartbreaking postcard from cinema’s furthermost frontiers, both chronicling the history of Ninja and Ghana’s crazed DIY digital film scene, and the birth of a demented partnership between two of the world’s most maverick directors.
Introduced by filmmaker and former Trash Video owner Andrew Leavold, this is not only the Brisbane premiere of Leavold’s ongoing Film Safari series, but also the launch of his five-week Kickstarter campaign (details soon!) to fund his upcoming feature film THE TALLER THEY COME, and film tour around the East Coast of Australia, the UK and the US.
6.30pm - drinks in the New Farm Cinemas foyer
7.30pm - Andrew Leavold's introduction and film, followed by Q&A and after-drinks
