UNSPOKEN: Film Screening – Circles of Willis by Donovan Pennant
As part of the public programme for UNSPOKEN, we are proud to premiere Circles of Willis (2005), the first documentary by filmmaker Donovan Pennant.
Created over three years, this deeply personal film documents life in the Meadows, Nottingham, capturing the lived realities of children and families navigating trauma, neglect, and resilience. Through an unflinching yet compassionate lens, Pennant gives voice to those often unheard.
This screening sits alongside UNSPOKEN, an exhibition inspired by Pennant’s work in the Meadows and soundscapes by Tom Harris, exploring listening as a powerful act of reflection.
Pennant’s work spans over four decades, examining emotional extremes—love, loss, responsibility—and what he describes as “psychological nihilism” shaping inner-city life. His later films, including The New World (2008) and 6 Degrees of Separation (2009), were screened at the Document 6 International Human Rights Film Festival.
This event offers:
- A rare full screening of Circles of Willis
- Insight into the origins of UNSPOKEN
- Space to reflect on memory, identity, and social change
A powerful and moving experience not to be missed.
Certificate 18 years old.
Audience note: Circles of Willis contains sensitive and potentially distressing material, including themes of child neglect, trauma, violence, social hardship with scenes of substance abuse.
